The Sermon on the Mount

Jesus gathered around with people

Origin: Matthew 5-7 in the Bible

Once upon a time, Jesus went up on a mountainside and sat down with His disciples. A large crowd gathered around Him, eager to hear what He had to say. Jesus looked at the crowd with love in His eyes and began to teach them important lessons about how to live a happy and blessed life.

He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”

Jesus continued, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”

As Jesus spoke, the people listened intently, hanging on to every word. He taught them about loving others, being kind, and forgiving those who hurt them. He said, “You are the light of the world. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Jesus also talked about prayer and how they should talk to God, their Heavenly Father. He said, “When you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father, who is unseen. He will reward you openly.”

He taught them not to worry about material things but to trust in God’s provision. He said, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Jesus ended His teachings with a powerful message about building their lives on a solid foundation. He said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall because it had its foundation on the rock.”

The people were amazed by Jesus’ teachings. They had never heard anyone speak with such authority and wisdom before. They knew that Jesus was a special teacher sent from God.

And so, children, the story of the Sermon on the Mount teaches us important lessons about how to live a happy and blessed life. Jesus’ teachings remind us to be kind, loving, and forgiving towards others. They also encourage us to trust in God and build our lives on a strong foundation of faith.
